United, Continental Discuss Merger to Create World’s Largest Airline

April 19, 2010

United Airlines and Continental are again talking about merging, just a week after reports that United and US Airways were discussing a merger. A United-Continental merger would make more sense because the two airlines’ route systems are complementary, with relatively little overlap. Continental and United held similar discussions two years ago, but Continental’s board suspended those talks. A combined United and Continental would create the world’s largest airline, traffic wise, larger even than Delta. A United-US Airways combination would be smaller than Delta.
