Qantas to Increase Service Between U.S., Australia

January 20, 2010

Qantas Airways will significantly increase its Airbus A380 services between the United States and Australia. Los Angeles-Sydney services will increase from four per week to daily, and Los Angeles-Melbourne services will increase from two to three per week. Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said the move from six to 10 A380 services per week between the two countries followed the recent delivery of the airline’s fifth and sixth aircraft. “It is an aircraft that generates strong customer demand and overwhelmingly positive customer feedback,” Joyce said. “More than 550,000 people have now flown on Qantas A380 services. As Australia’s premier airline, we are proud to be the only carrier offering A380 services from the U.S., and from today, our six-strong fleet will enable us to offer daily A380 services between Los Angeles and Sydney for the first time, and also increase weekly services from Los Angeles to Melbourne.”

The announcement coincides with a range of special USA fares released last week to celebrate the annual G’Day USA 2010 event, now in its seventh year. For travel booked before Feb. 1, Qantas customers can save up to 40 percent on Economy and Premium Economy bookings and up to 60 percent in Business. Round-trip Economy fares on flights to Sydney from Los Angeles and San Francisco start from $798, while round-trip Economy fares from New York to Sydney start at $998. Qantas now operates 40 return services per week between the United States and Australia, including 33 from Los Angeles (to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane), four from San Francisco and three from Honolulu.
