OK, first off, it’s pronounced “KAH-pree.” Emphasis on that first syllable.
You would actually have to BE a legendary island to match all the modern mythologies that swirl around the Italian islet of Capri. Off the idyllic Neapolitan coast, the island has attracted sun-worshippers (sometimes literally) since the Neolithic. The Romans turned Capri into a paradisiacal retreat for retired emperors, and it was luring “modern” tourists by the 17th century. By the 19thcentury, Capri was a nexus for the art world; in the 20th, glitterati descended en mass, making Capri a by-word for the Mediterranean escape it is today.
Now it’s our turn. This September 6-9, the island gets its gay on and unfurls the colors for the “Capri Rainbow” tour, a 3-day sweep through the legendary landscape that has won over anybody who ever saw it. If you ever needed an excuse to go to Italy, boy-oh-boy, is this a good one.
After your arrival (via Naples), guests are whisked off for a proper welcome in the Piazzetta, one of the most iconic plazas in the Mediterranean and a Capri must-do. Next on the list is a bit of highbrow Euro-culture: A music concert at the Certosa di San Giacomo monastery sung by maestro Antonello Cascone. Second on the list? Total lowbrow Euro-culture, since you are let loose WITH FREE ACCESS on the club scene into the wee hours.
Remember this is just the first day. If you make to Day 2, you are cordially invited to the Capri Palace Hotel for a meet-and-greet with all the power-players on the island (Capri is eager to woo the LGBT market, and officials want to thank you, personally, for showing up. They take the island’s good name seriously, and nobody says “Benvenuto!” like the mayor…). After pressing the flesh, the town of Anacapri is next, and this is a journey through bougainvillea blossoms, the scent of citrus groves, and the old, rich flavors that makes Capri such an epicurean magnet. “Chef of excellence” Renato De Gregorio will blow your taste buds away before you are let loose (again) to discover some of the best tailors and shoe-makers in the world. Say the airline looses your luggage; few places offer better replacements than Italy.
Day 3 rocks—a boat tour of Capri, and an afternoon of frolicking in a star-sapphire sea. Come evening, a dinner buffet and a White Party will be thrown in the bay of Marina Piccola, in one of the most exclusive venues of the island, La Canzone del Mare; and get this: It’s a foam party. Let yourself go, immersed by white foam floating in a swimming pool rising straight from the sea, and let explode the kind of freedom that only a Mediterranean night can unleash.
Oo.
