Located on the sunny Bay of Banderas on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, most of Puerto Vallarta’s modern history has been that of a premier resort…and more. The city has been off and running ever since it was put on the map in the 1960s as the setting for Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and their notorious extramarital affair during filming of “Night of the Iguana.”
Why break with tradition?
This November, from the 21st to 25th — the week of Thanksgiving, so you know you’ll have some vacation time at on hand — the city hosts Vallarta Fever, five fun-filled days of fun-filled gays and who knows how many affairs. The action is spread out over the city, its hotels, and its beaches for the week; this is by no means an event contained to a few dark corners. Puerto Vallarta is a big place, but the hard and fast rule of where to seen and be seen depends on the Sun: if it’s up, the action is sure to be at the gay stretch of sand, the famous Lido Beach. If the Moon is up, time to head to Club Mañana, Club Papi, and Freedom, each fueled by a veritable who’s-who of international power-DJs: Hector Fonseca, Tony Moran, Brett Henrichsen and Mexico’s own Cristian Leyva are all on tap to shake Puerto Vallarta down to its foundations.
Highlights? That’s a tough one; this fiesta effectively puts Puerto Vallarta on the world party-circuit. However, in a bit of rare foresight, planners thought ahead and evenly-spaced each event throughout the week with very little overlap. Night owls addicted to unabated acoustic shockwaves should set their sights on Friday the 23rd when Tony Moran pounds out the dance tracks at Club Mañana at the Fever’s Latin take on the White Party (properly-hued dress required) and also Saturday the 24th, which is when Hector Fonseca, the official remixer of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Beyoncé, blasts off at the 10 PM-to-6 AM Latin Fever Party, officially “the” party of the week. Alternatively, sun-worshippers should head off to the two noontime beach parties at Lido Beach on the 23rd and 24th. It all wraps up on the 25thwith the Adios Vallarta! Closing Party with a “special guest DJ” that will not be revealed until the actual day arrives. Coy, but you gotta dig the suspense…provided you’re still standing after a week of non-stop lip-smacking Latin love.
