For those of not in the know, the Riviera Maya is particularly picturesque stretch of powder-white Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, framed by Cancún in the north and Punta Allen in the south, with the island of Cozumel thrown in. Lapped by electric blue waves are some of the most exclusive resorts in the Caribbean: The Viceroy, Rosewood, the Banyan Tree…
And screw ‘em all, because you can’t run around nakie in public there.
But that particular activity, and so many others (!), are encouraged from August 31 to September 7 at the all-inclusive Adonis Tulum, the Riviera Maya’s only “straight friendly” resort and site of one of the most colorful gay events in the Americas: The week-long/multi-party/all-male/dance extravaganza that is CaribbeanHeat.
Overlooked by the ruins of the ancient Mayan port city of Tulum (“too-loom”), things start off with a bang at the Welcome Party, and because there are nine parties crammed into the seven days of the event, it’s best to throw your clock out the window. It’s also best to pay at least a little attention to your dress (for the five seconds you actually remain dressed…) The Yin Party is black-attire only; the Yang Party, white-only. The Speedo Party is self-explanatory. The two Manhunt.com parties are really self-explanatory. And the “run around nakie” part? The hotel has a clothing-optional area, for all those who pride themselves on non-existent tan lines.
For those in sticker shock at the $1,180 price tag, here is what that entitles: Accommodation for all seven nights in a selected suite at the Mexican-Mediterranean Adonis Tulum, all meals and snacks, dinner a la carte at any of the hotel’s restaurants (Mexican, Italian, Asian), beverages (all house wine, beers, liquor, and soft drinks for you milquetoasts), and VIP access to all the parties. More over, Delta Airlines is offering CaribbeanHeat attendees 20% discount on all its flights to Cancún International Airport (that’s where you fly in) eligible from any aiport, and CaribbeanHeat offers a 10% discount on all packages for all Manhunt users. And on the off chance you need a break, tours of the afore-mentioned Tulum, one of the most beautiful of all Mayan sites, and the spectacular pyramids of Chichén Itzá are available if you want to get your culture (both sites are not to be missed; Tulum is all of five minutes away).
