Unless you are a “Jeopardy” freak, you will probably have no idea what I am talking about when I say the name “Nuuk.” In fact, you will probably think I am clearing my throat. It is, in fact, the capital of Kalaallit Nunaat, AKA Greenland. And even on the second largest ice sheet in the world (for the moment, anyway), even with a population dwarfed by that of Dade County, even in a place where you don’t where a tank-top unless you think frostbite is “in” this season, not only is there a Pride, there’s a gay club.
Let me say right off that Greenland is not exactly the first place one thinks of to go for a gaycation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wrangle one. Most visitors are there for the ecotourism, whale watching, auroras, and skiing, and there are few landscapes more primordial and more untouched than this one. But if you want to get your gay on, where does one go on a frozen island with more seals than people?
Manhattan is the premier gay club of Nuuk. It is also the only club in Nuuk—so be prepared for a mixed crowed. It’s not that Manhattan began gay, and it does not bill itself as such, but it did sorta evolve into that role. And, if you really want photos for the record books, the Nuuk Pride is on May 15 (book early, if only because it’s not like Nuuk is a major stop on air routes). As Nuuk is only 150 miles from the Arctic Circle on the downright freezing Baffin Bay, it will be the most bundled-up parade you have ever seen. But a party nonetheless. And, being a territory of oh-so forward-thinking Denmark, the attitudes towards the LGBTQ population is refreshingly modern.
The important thing about a Greenlandic vacation is to keep the horizons broad. There is not going to be a lot in the way of infrastructure—although it is a world capital and the largest city on Greenland, rustic Nuuk has a population only barely over 16,000; its first shopping center opened just last year. However, it should come as no surprise the city is a serious hotspot for genuine Arctic culture and art (the soapstone carvings are gorgeous, particularly the chess sets). The Hotel Hans Egede serves up hospitality with the best of them, and the concierge is a godsend for all the musts of the city and the island as a whole.
