Destinations: New York City // Quin-tessential

June 8, 2015

You may have many pride events on your calendars, but a few intrepid souls have their eyes on the Big Daddy: New York

Falling on the last Sunday in June, the largest gay pride event in the country rakes in a whopping one million-plus visitors each year, and kicks off “crunch season” in the Big Apple’s hotels. We are now entering the New York summer, when finding a room is about as challenging as finding a happy-go-lucky SJW. It’s music to the ears of New York, but pure tedium for the rest of us who have to find a place — somewhere, anywhere — to stay. Preferably in a place that isn’t so far away (say, Staten Island or the Rockaways) that it is impractical.
This is why the Quin Hotel is a standout. Its Midtown address on 57th Street and 6th Avenue put it a stone’s throw away from the Pride Parade on 5th Avenue. The parade itself starts at 36th Street, so the Quin is close enough to put NYC Pride within walking distance, but far enough away that when you leave the crowd, it won’t follow you.
But the Quin has more going for it that just a good location. It represents one of New York’s finest “art hotels.” Not only does it have a famous art residency program, it puts the works composed from it on a huge glowing mosaic of flat screens in the lobby to give you a good idea of the cultural cauldron the Quin is, along with the next big thing in the hypercompetitive art world.
More over, the hotel is graced top to bottom in originals from some of the biggest names in the art scene in recent years, including Blek le Rat, the mentor of the great Banksy. This isn’t some recent marketing scheme and a few judicious purchases at a local gallery — the Quin has hosted legends Georgia O’Keefe and Chagall. This place has art in every stone. It should come as no surprise the Art Students League of New York, one of the most prestigious art schools in the world, is one block over past 7th Avenue.
And if we go back to location-location-location, the Quin is pretty much dead-center of the action in Manhattan, Pride Parade or no Pride Parade. Central Park is two blocks up, Carnegie Hall is across the street, MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) is on 6th Avenue and 53rd, and Radio City Music Hall at 6th and 50th. More than enough to keep you busy.
And, this being NYC Pride, getting busy is all but mandated.
