Delta Institutes Program to Let Passenger Bid on Getting Bumped

January 13, 2011

Delta Air Lines has instituted a program in which passengers indicate at check-in that they’re willing to take a later flight and to enter the dollar amount that would make taking a later flight worth it to passengers. The passengers’ offer is then forwarded electronically to the agents already at the departure gate for review, which gives agents an early start on rebooking you on the next available flight while you’re en route to the gate area. It’s designed to save time for customers with flexible schedules because it allows Delta to have their revised travel options ready to discuss with them when volunteers arrive at the gate should Delta need passengers to give up seats. That avoids last-minute calls for volunteers, which can sometimes delay a flight’s departure.

If, however, an involuntary denied boarding occurs, Delta applies its standard policies, which provide up to $400 if travelers are scheduled to arrive one to two hours later than their original arrival (one to four hours later internationally), and up to $800 if they are scheduled to arrive more than two hours later than their original arrival (more than four hours later for international) should they be forced to take a later flight.
