Branson Announces Plans for Supersonic Jets

Just a month after unveiling a spaceship that will take average people to outer space for $250,000 a pop, Richard Branson announced Wednesday his plans to build supersonic jets, The Guardian reported.

The founder of Virgin Group told The Guardian that his transatlantic passenger flights will be affordable, unlike the Concorde was years ago.

Branson told The Guardian that his company might buy 10 of the airplanes to use for 3.5-hour passenger flights between London and New York.

Pilot and former Amazon executive Blake Scholl is working with Branson to build a prototype of the new jet, which has been named Boom, according to The Guardian.

“We are talking about the first supersonic jet people can afford to fly,” Scholl said. “This isn’t science fiction; we are actually doing this. You will be able to fly New York to London in three-and-a-half hours for $5,000 return, [which is roughly] the same as [the cost] of business class.”
