Qantas to Fly Oprah Winfrey, Entire Audience to Sydney

September 14, 2010

Qantas will fly the entire audience of The Oprah Winfrey Show to Australia in December. Speaking at a media conference in Sydney, Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said this was a fantastic opportunity for Qantas and the Australian tourism industry. “The Oprah Winfrey show has a world-wide audience across 145 countries and we are delighted to partner with Tourism Australia on this amazing opportunity to showcase the best Australia has to offer,” Joyce said. “As Australia’s national carrier, we look forward to flying the ‘Oprah’ show correspondents and over 300 of Oprah’s most loyal viewers to Australia on our fleet, which includes B747s and the award-winning A380 aircraft.”

Qantas Ambassador-at-Large, film star, John Travolta, joined Winfrey on her season premiere episode to make the announcement to the audience. “As part of the Qantas team, I am delighted that the audience will have the opportunity to travel on the award-winning Qantas A380,” Travolta said.

Of the Qantas superjumbo A380 jet, Joyce noted that more than 550,000 passengers have flown on the A380 since it entered the fleet in late 2008, and customer feedback has been outstanding. The Qantas A380 features the fewest amount of seats (450) in the premium carrier industry. Qantas currently has six A380s in service and expects to take delivery of its seventh in the final quarter of 2010 with a 10th aircraft to be delivered by March 2011.
Qantas operates up to 45 return services from the US to Australia per week, and offers the only daily A380 service from Los Angeles to Sydney, along with A380 service three times per week from Los Angeles to Melbourne (increasing to daily upon delivery of the 10th A380 from Airbus).

Travolta has been a Qantas Ambassador-at-Large since 2002 and has been associated with the airline with initiatives including the Spirit of Friendship Tour, piloting his own Qantas Boeing 707 since 2002, celebrating the inaugural flight of the Qantas A380 flight between Australia and Los Angeles, and recently attending the World Cup in South Africa to cheer on the Qantas Socceroos.
