A Horror or not?? Delta Drops Comlimentary Upgrades on Transcontinental Flights

December 11, 2013

Yesterday, Delta announced that they will no longer honor complimentary Elite Medallion upgrades on flights between JFK and LAX/SFO (BusinessElite service).  Instead, staring on March 1, 2014, Delta Medallion Elite flyers will be awarded the upgrades as their Choice Benefit option.  Each electronic upgrade which will be valid for a one way upgrade on most economy paid fares (not including E Class):

  • Diamond Medallion SkyMiles frequent flier loyalty program members may choose either four Global Upgrades or eight Regional Upgrades as one of their Choice Benefits selections
  • Platinum Medallion SkyMiles frequent flier loyalty program members may choose four Regional Upgrades

The good news about this new program is that a flyer will no longer need to purchase an expensive “upgradeable” economy ticket in order to use their Regional or Global Upgrades.  The bad news is that you must either use an upgrade certificate or miles to sit up front on the transcontinental routes mentioned above.

The days of seeing an upgrade list of 46 passengers deep to LA on Delta are over.  Keep flying and you will be awarded.
